Khmer Artefacts in the Sakon Nakhon Museum

The little Sakon Nakhon Museum (พิพิธภัณฑ์เมืองสกลนคร) at Rajabhat University has a collection of local art and artefacts from the prehistoric to the present, including several items uncovered at Phra That Choeng Chum.

The museum is on the second floor. It’s not normally open, so you need to first stop in the little library next to the museum (in the building’s northeast corner) to get someone to open it.

As of December 2021, these are all the Khmer artifacts from a known temple ruin on display.

Phra That Choeng Chum (พระธาตุเชิงชุม) – Amphoe Mueang, Sakon Nakhon

Shiva statue standing on a yoni — Shiva on a yoni pedestal – 11th to 12th century (The label mistakenly says 10th century.)

feet of a statue — Feet of unknown deity – 10th to 13th century

broken hand of a statue — Hand of unknown deity – 10th to 13th century

two small pots with lines painted on them — Pots – 10th to 13th century

five Khmer bottles — Bottles – 10th to 11th century

three highly eroded votive tablets — Buddhist votive tablets – 13th century

highly eroded votive tablet — Ratnatriya votive tablet (The Three Jewels of Buddhism) – 13th century

large pot — Pot – 10th to 13th century

pedestal — Pedestal – 11th to 13th century. Though found at Wat Si Chomphu, this pedestal was probably used at Phra That Choeng Chum, which is just 600 meters away.

Hi I was looking for information about the ancient stone building at Tha Rae and found this site which is interesting, because of the photos which give a glimpse into the past.
